This session explores the recent additional of Prolonged Grief Disorder, added to the DSM5-TR in 2023. By engaging in historical analysis, critical examination, and practical exploration, participants will develop a thorough comprehension of the evolving conceptualization of grief within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), alongside ongoing debates regarding the addition of PGD. Additionally, this session emphasizes the recognition that PGD can have harmful implications for individuals experiencing grief, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges they face.

Content Level: Requires graduate level education. Intermediate level of training content. No prior education in grief is required before taking the course.

Course material includes: defining grief/bereavement, theories of grief models, theories of grief interventions, controversy regarding Prolonged Grief Disorder, research about what is most helpful for the traumatically bereaved, and use of grief specific supports and therapeutic actions that align with Grief Affirming Practice (TM).
Course completion & CE info: Participants will be provided with their CE certificate at the end of the training presentation after completion of the course evaluation and signing out at the end of the training.

Terri Waibel, MSW, LCSW, FT is the founder and continuing education director of the Southwest Institute for Grief and Trauma Studies, an education body that is closing the gap in grief education for helping professionals. Terri is also the founder and clinical director of Center for Compassion, a multi-provider psychotherapy practice in Arizona that is dedicated to supporting the traumatically bereaved after the death of a beloved person. As the 2023 NASW Arizona Social Worker of the Year, Terri brings 20 years of volunteer and work experience to the field. Terri is simultaneously honored and heartbroken to be present with grievers and proud to call herself a grief activist.
